Description:In response to a request from an employee representative, an evaluation was made of possible hazardous conditions at the Ford Motor Company (SIC-3710), San Jose, California. The facility was primarily an assembly place for compact automobiles and light trucks. Concern centered around exposure to carbon-monoxide (630080), sulfur-dioxide (7446095), nitrogen-dioxide (10102440), benzene (71432), ozone (10028156), dibutyl-phthalates, and oil mists. Evaluations indicated that exposures in excess of NIOSH recommended limits were occurring for carbon-monoxide (maximum 70ppm), sulfur-dioxide (1.0 to 2.5ppm), and nitrogen-dioxide (0.5 to 1.0ppm). These levels occurred in the Tow/In and Road Test operations at the facility. No consistent patterns of cardiovascular disease or diseases of the respiratory tract were found among employees. The authors conclude that a health hazard did exist from carbon-monoxide, sulfur-dioxide and nitrogen-dioxide exposures for workers in some areas of this facility. The authors recommend that engineering controls be used to decrease toxic exposures, including an upgrading of the local exhaust ventilation system, improved general room ventilation, the use of gas vapor recovery systems, and environmental monitoring. The medical histories of the employees could be more concisely and more orderly maintained.
