Description:In response to a request from Surtek, Incorporated (SIC-7391), Golden, Colorado, an investigation was made of possible worker exposure to mercury (7439976) and solvents used in consulting work for enhanced oil recovery. At the time of the survey, there were three people working in the facility. Studies were made in five major areas of the facility. In one laboratory, a mercury spill had occurred, prompting this evaluation. Time weighted average concentrations of mercury in six area samples ranged from 0.0011 to million (ppm) of acetone (67641), and 0.43 and 0.81ppm of hexane (110543). Because a new process involved tests to neutralize creosote (8001589) in soil, area air samples were tested for coal tar pitch volatiles (CTPVs) and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNAs). CTPVs were not detected in air samples. Naphthalene (91203), the only PNA found, was detected at 0.005 and 0.011mg/m3. The authors conclude that workers are not overexposed to mercury, acetone, hexane or creosote. The authors recommend measures to further control exposure, including improved laboratory ventilation, temperature control, capping of solvents not in use, and improved general housekeeping methods.
