Description:In response to a request from a representative of OCAW Local 4-23, an investigation of a suspected excess of heart disease at the Treating Department, acid area of Texaco, Inc., Port Arthur, Texas, was undertaken. Workers were potentially exposed to various organic compounds, acids, and other agents. Eleven workers were reported to have heart disease of various etiologies. Coronary artery disease was present in nine workers, cerebrovascular accident in one, and aortic stenosis in one. Predisposing factors in these 11 workers included hypertension in eight, diabetes in one, obesity in four, tobacco consumption in six, blood fat abnormalities in two, and a family history of vascular disease in four. The authors conclude that it is not likely that the incidence of heart disease at Texaco is in any way related to occupational exposures. The presence of so many predisposing conditions in these patients makes it impossible to evaluate the effects of job factors as potential contributors to the disease incidence.
