Description:In response to a request from the employees at the Roaring Ford Transit Agency (SIC-4171), Aspen, Colorado, an evaluation was made of possible health hazards in the bus repair storage area resulting from diesel emissions. Employees experienced eye, nose and throat irritation and occasional headaches. Samples taken at the site indicated that although detectable levels of sulfur-dioxide (7446095), nitrogen-dioxide (10102440), total particulates, formaldehyde (50000) and carbon-monoxide (630080) (CO) were present in the work area, and were higher in winter than summer months, they were still below levels considered to be hazardous. The reservation's room was found to have short term CO levels ranging from 7 to 35 parts per million. The authors conclude that a health hazard did not exist for workers in the bus storage barn during this evaluation. A potential hazardous exposure to CO was identified in the reservationist's room. The authors recommend that all buses be turned off after entering the terminal area and that if it is necessary for a bus to remain running because of extreme temperature conditions, a means of exhausting emissions from the tail pipes should be developed. Periodic evaluation and maintenance of the air vents should be performed in the terminal, and the make up air source be extended to the roof.
