Description:In response to a request from the Ministry of Health of St. Lucia concerning excessive noise exposure for workers in several of the country's industries, technical expertise and equipment from NIOSH were directed toward a project for hearing conservation for workers in that country. One day of noise sampling was conducted at each location in order to maximize the number of locations from which data was collected. The industries sampled included the Winera Box Facility (SIC-2653), the LUCELEC - Vieux Fort (SIC-4911), Belles Fashions (SIC-2342), Tolyn Paper Company (SIC-2647), Heinekin Brewery (SIC-2082), NEHOC Gloves (SIC-2381), Data Delay Devices (SIC- 3674), LUCELEC - Union Station (SIC-4911), N.Y. Daher Tobacco Co. (SIC-2111), Ramco Plastics Co. (SIC-3079), DuBoulay's Bottling Co. (SIC-2086), and the Government's Printery (SIC-2741). Of the 12 industries sampled, six had at least one 8 hour time weighted average noise level measurement which exceeded the U.S. OSHA noise PEL of 90 decibels-A (dB-A). Eleven of the 12 had noise levels exceeding the NIOSH REL of 85 dB-A. The author recommends that personnel from the Ministry of Health return to the 12 factories with excessive noise levels to distribute copies of the findings
that the need for audiometric testing of St. Lucian workers be pursued
that academic programs concerning hearing, auditory anatomy and physiology, and hearing loss be developed in the school system
that employees be informed of the results
that hearing protective devices be made mandatory in noise industries
that LUCELEC be the first industry to receive the hearing conservation program
and that additional unsafe conditions discovered during these surveys also be addressed.
