Description:In response to a request from the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 686, an evaluation of working conditions was conducted at Teepak, Inc., Danville, Illinois concerning was possible exposure to carbon-disulfide (75150) (CS2) and subsequent increases in the incidence of heart disease and cancer. CS2 was used at this facility during the manufacturing of Wienie-Pak which was used in the processing of skinless wieners. Of 257 readings of air quality which had been taken in the past, the mean CS2 level was 4.9 parts per million (ppm) with a median of 2.2ppm and a range from 0.1 to 53ppm. Most of the readings were below 10ppm with 7 percent falling between 10 and 19.9ppm. About 6 percent were at or above the OSHA permissible exposure level of 20ppm. Baratte operators in the chemical department experienced the highest exposure levels. From 1957 through 1980 there were no industrial hygiene monitoring data available for review and it was during this earlier time that the exposure to CS2 was thought to have been significantly higher. The personnel records of 10 percent (224 employees) of the company employees were reviewed for purposes of mortality evaluation. This sampling revealed no elevation in overall mortality. However, the death rate from arteriosclerotic heart disease was marginally elevated, particularly in light of the probably incomplete ascertainment of deaths in this study. Death rates from cancer were also elevated. No evidence of an association between CS2 exposure and heart disease was noted overall, although there was some association in workers 50 years old or less.
