Description:In response to a request from a dentist, an evaluation was made of possible health hazards existing at the Joseph T. Luttmer dental office, located in Cincinnati, Ohio. The facility was situated on the second floor of an older office building overlooking a town square in the eastern side of the city. The carpeting in the office had been installed just prior to the move to this particular suite of offices in 1979. The office was staffed by the dentist and two to three assistants and hygienists, and one to two bookkeepers and receptionists. The office staff estimated that they can make up to 15 to 20 amalgams per day with inorganic mercury (7439976) being a component. Mercury exposures ranged from 0.016 to 0.022mg/m3 for the personal breathing zone and area full shift samples. Instantaneous airborne mercury levels measured with the direct reading instrument ranged from 0.048 to 0.066mg/m3. Mercury vapor levels measured directly over surfaces with the direct reading instrument ranged from 0.027 to 1.216mg/m3. The medical evaluation revealed no symptoms suggestive of mercury toxicity in the dental office personnel. Urine samples indicated ranges from 6.9 to 20.0 micrograms/liter in three staff members.
