Description:In response to a request from three Southern Bell employees, an evaluation was made of exposures to organic diisocyanates and other volatile organic compounds potentially released when removing and applying a reenterable encapsulant used to protect telephone cable splices. The evaluation was carried out during a simulated cable repair in an underground cable vault. After workers installed a ventilation blower and verified with direct reading instruments that the vault was safe to enter, two casings were taken below and mounted on two empty cable racks. During the mixing and pouring operation, one worker mixed the encapsulation while working inside the vault. This worker wore gloves and safety glasses. Air monitoring in the cable vault during mixing and pouring of D- Encapsulant showed no diisocyanate exposures above the 0.001 parts per million limit of detection. These findings indicated that although methylenebisphenyl-diisocyanate (101688) MDI monomer is in the activator, mixing the activator with the polyol may quickly inhibit release of MDI vapor into the breathing zone. The authors recommend measures to reduce any hazardous exposures.
