Description:

In response to a request from the Director of the Regional Support Office of the Department of Energy, technical assistance was offered to Westside Energy Co-Op, a weatherization agency in Denver, Colorado, following the issuance of a citation by OSHA. It had failed to monitor worker exposure to asbestos (1332214) during the weatherization of homes containing asbestos. Of the 30 homes visited during weatherization, air sampling was conducted in 12 of them. As a result of the study, the following recommendations were made: that Westside continue their program of identifying asbestos containing material in client homes and avoid potentially hazardous homes, that new workers be educated on asbestos identification and the health hazards associated with asbestos exposure, that individual homeowners be notified if suspected asbestos containing material was identified in their homes, and that attic insulation workers wear eye protection during exposure to boric-acid (10043353) treated cellulose insulation.
