Description:

In response to a request from the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union, an evaluation was made of the potential for occupational exposure to hazardous chemicals in the finishing department at the Fashion Tannery (SIC-3111), Gloversville, New York. The company was a finish tannery and processed whole cow hides into upholstery leather. The company had two spray lines, one with four eight-gun spray booths and the other with six 16-gun spray booths. The company had used dimethylformamide (68122) until 1987. Area air samples were taken in the finishing department. The results were all well below the applicable exposure limits. The author concludes that, while there was only a limited possibility of exposure to airborne contaminants in the finishing department, there was a potential for dermal exposure due to poor work practices and personal hygiene. The personal protective equipment available was not well maintained. The author recommends measures to further reduce potential exposures.
