Description:In response to a request from employees, an investigation was undertaken of lower extremity musculoskeletal problems in optical character reader (OCR) and bar code sorter (BCS) employees at the Denver General Mail Facility (SIC-4311), Denver, Colorado. The facility employed about 2500 workers on three shifts. Approximately 2 million pieces of mail were handled there each day. The concern was in relation to lower extremity musculoskeletal problems potentially related to the hard surface upon which OCR and BCS employees are required to work. Employees alternate between loading and sweeping the machines every 30 to 120 minutes, at the discretion of the individual employee. During the loading task the employees stood on a hard floor. During the sweeping task the employees walked on a hard floor surface. The author concludes that a potential ergonomic hazard exists for these workers. The author recommends reducing or eliminating this potential hazard through a redesigned workstation and through proper attention being given to posture.
