  In response to a request from the Cement, Lime, Gypsum and Allied Workers Division of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Local 106, a study was conducted of heat stress conditions that kiln assistants were exposed to during water blasting of the preheat tower riser at the Lehigh Portland Cement Company (SIC-3241), Mason City, Iowa. The company manufactured portland cement using the flash calcining preheat process. Measurements indicated that a significant radiant heat load was present at the site, the personal protective equipment used by the workers impeded evaporative loss, and the air stream of the cooling fans exceeded 100 degrees-F which increased the heat burden. Wet bulb globe temperatures ranged from 87 to 103 degrees-F, while dry bulb and black globe temperatures were close to 123 and 140 degrees. The authors conclude that environmental conditions exceeded the evaluation criteria. The authors recommend that radiant heat shields be installed, that refractory linings and cooling air ventilation be added, that area fans be repositioned, that cool potable water be provided, and that a heat stress management program be implemented. The use of body cooling and heat reflective personal protective equipment is stressed.
