  In response to a request from employees of the University of Georgia (SIC-8221) in Athens, Georgia, an investigation was made of a suspected cancer cluster in the Department of History located in LeConte Hall. An apparent cluster of 11 cancer cases was identified among staff and students in the History Department with the five faculty cases involving one each of Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, acute myelogenous leukemia, colon cancer, prostate cancer, and kidney cancer. The six cases among students included one each of Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, breast cancer, leukemia, and brain cancer with two cases having an unspecified site. The history of research activities in LeConte Hall was investigated to determine whether long lived radioactive materials may have been used. Ionizing radiation levels were measured in the building. Evidence of chemical exposure or other medically significant exposures was lacking. The authors conclude that it is unlikely that the cases could be attributed to the atmosphere or environment at LeConte Hall. The current levels of radiation and chemical contamination at this site do not indicate an existing health hazard.
