Description:In response to a request from an Indoor Air Quality task force established by the Western Primary School Corporation, a follow up investigation was undertaken of modifications to the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system at the Western Primary School (SIC-8211), Russiaville, Indiana. There were 23 teachers and about 500 students from kindergarten through the second grade at the school. Some teachers had experienced fatigue and headaches since the building was first occupied. Some teachers and students experienced intermittent facial redness, primarily on the cheeks. Environmental measurements were made, employee interviews were conducted concerning current symptoms, and the HVAC system was evaluated. The authors conclude that no health hazards were identified during the evaluation, and that the frequency of symptoms associated with being in the building had decreased from the previous year. The authors recommend that specific measures be taken to further improve the HVAC system, including improving accessibility to these units for maintenance, increasing air filtration efficiency, ensuring proper installation of HVAC insulation, and performing scheduled preventive maintenance, cleaning, and calibrations of the control systems.
