  In response to a confidential request, an evaluation was made of indoor environmental quality concerns, exposures to vapors from wallpaper and wallpaper adhesive, and chemical contamination of the drinking water at the Harold Washington Social Security Center (SIC- 9441), Chicago, Illinois. The Center was located in a ten-story building and employed about 1800 people. Questionnaires concerning symptoms and building environment were completed by 134 of 250 workers, and eight individuals were interviewed. The primary complaints concerned a lack of air circulation, humidity levels and temperature fluctuations. The most frequently reported symptoms were headache, stuffy nose, and runny nose. Temperature, relative humidity, carbon-dioxide (124389), petroleum distillates and carbon- monoxide (630080) levels in the air were measured. Volatile organic compound levels were determined in water from drinking fountains. Head space/off gas analysis was conducted on vinyl wall covering samples. The authors conclude that no specific health hazard was identified. However, thermal comfort was a problem. The authors recommend that humidity levels and temperatures be decrease to within guidelines.
