Description:In response to a request from Senator Patrick J. Leahy's office, an evaluation was performed of indoor environmental quality at the Vermont Department of Agriculture (SIC-9641), Montpelier, Vermont. One employee had been forced to stop working in the building due to respiratory illness. This person had begun to experience difficulties shortly after moving into the newly renovated first floor office space. This space had been converted from laboratories to offices and the renovation work included painting, plastering, varnishing, and carpeting. Medical interviews revealed that five of the ten workers were currently experiencing symptoms including headache, excessive fatigue, eye irritation, throat irritation, and nasal congestion. While none of the investigated agents were present at levels above the limits allowed, there did appear to be a temporal relationship between the renovation activities and the appearance of employee symptoms. Conditions which would create elevated indoor temperatures existed. The authors conclude that there appeared to be a temporal relationship between the renovation activities and the appearance of employee symptoms. The authors recommend that efforts should be made to increase ventilation, decrease the solar heat load, and use low emitting building materials and furnishings in future remodeling.
