Description:In response to a request from the United Auto Workers International Union (UAW), an investigation was made of urticaria and dermatitis in workers at NTN Bower Corporation (SIC-3562), Hamilton, Alabama. There were 393 workers employed in the manufacture of tapered roller bearings. Even though gloves were available throughout the facility, many workers exposed to cutting fluids did not use them. Chromium (7440473) and nickel (7440020) were found in the cutting fluid samples collected. Cutting fluids all had a pH of about 9. Several metals were detected in two personal and two area air samples. Under certain conditions, the face air velocity measurements made at the rust stripper local exhaust hood were less than the 75 feet per minute. Inspection of two heating, ventilation and air conditioning units revealed a heavy coating of an oily, tar like matter on the filters and coils. The authors conclude that, even though steps had been taken to improve conditions at the facility after a previous NIOSH health hazard evaluation, skin problems continued to develop among the workers. The authors recommend that there should be a continuing effort to decrease worker exposures to cutting fluids and oils. Other recommendations included evaluation of the types of gloves used, improving ventilation system maintenance, establishing a log to monitor dermatologic conditions, air sampling for nickel, and placing increased emphasis on education and communication regarding occupational safety and health issues for these workers.
