Description:In response to a request from an employee representative, an investigation was made of exposures to chemicals, ultraviolet radiation, and pathogens in the microbiology laboratory at Manatee Memorial Hospital (SIC-8071), Bradenton, Florida. A study was undertaken to examine carbon-dioxide (124389) exposures from incubators, germicidal ultraviolet radiation exposures, ventilation performance of a biological safety cabinet (BSC), general room ventilation, and the potential for ethyl-acetate (141786) and formaldehyde (50000) exposures. There were five employees working in the microbiology laboratory during the first shift, and one working part time on second and third shifts. When the incubator door was opened, instantaneous personal breathing zone concentrations ranged from 1600 to 5000 parts per million (ppm) for carbon-dioxide. Ultraviolet radiation levels varied widely, ranging from 0.1 to 0.8 microwatts/square centimeter. Employee interviews did not identify factors or exposures that could be specifically correlated to symptoms, which included sleepiness, headaches, and sinusitis. The author concludes that carbon-dioxide concentrations did not present a hazard, but that exposure to ultraviolet radiation presented a potential health hazard near the BSC. When formaldehyde and ethyl-acetate were moved from the BSC to the laboratory hood, symptoms reportedly decreased. The author recommends measures related to ultraviolet lamp use, airborne and blood borne disease, and hazard communication training.
