Description:In response to a request from the Health and Safety department at the Ohio University located in Athens, Ohio, an investigation was undertaken of solvent exposures during the removal of asbestos (1332214) containing tile mastic. A contractor (SIC-1799) was employed to remove asbestos containing materials from a five-story structure built in 1959, including 52,000 square feet of floor tile. Organic solvents were used to remove the mastic which bound the tile to the floor. Personal breathing zone and area air samples were collected. Exposures ranged from 8 to 107mg/m3 for ethylene- glycol-monobutyl-ether (111762) (EGBE) and from 42 to 410mg/m3 for refined petroleum solvent. The author concludes that workers were potentially overexposed to EGBE and refined petroleum solvent. Monitoring for organic vapors should be conducted during the removal of the mastic. The author recommends that work practices be changed, and improvements be made in the use of personal protective equipment.
