Description:In response to a request from the National Centers for Environmental Health, technical assistance was rendered in assessing airborne concentrations of methyl-tert-butyl-ether (1634044) (MtBE), benzene (71432), xylene (1330207), and toluene (108883) at maintenance facilities for motor vehicles (SIC-4173) where workers were exposed to gasoline (8006619) and exhaust emissions. Sites included automobile dealerships, auto repair shops, and municipal agencies. Bulk samples of fuel were collected from sites dispensing gasoline. Monitoring of the air quality was also performed for workers at these sites. The MtBE content of the fuels tested ranged from 13 to 17% and the benzene content was slightly over 1%. Toluene and xylene concentrations in the personal breathing zone samples ranged from less than 0.03 to 0.65 parts per million (ppm) and less than 0.02 to 0.32ppm, respectively. MtBE levels ranged from less than 0.03 to 12.04ppm. Benzene concentrations ranged from less than 0.004 to 0.427ppm. The Recommended Exposure Limit for benzene (0.1ppm) was exceeded in two samples. The author concludes that workers were exposed to potentially hazardous concentrations of benzene. The author recommends specific measures, including administrative and engineering controls, to reduce these levels of exposure.
