Description:In response to a request from the International Chemical Workers Union, an investigation was conducted at Growth International, Bennett Industries Division (SIC-3411), Peotone, Illinois to investigate possible exposures occurring during the painting or printing of logos and labels on containers. The division employed 181 people in the manufacture of small to medium sized plastic and metal containers. A survey of the ventilation system revealed deficiencies with the local exhaust systems of several paint booths and drying ovens. Environmental sampling indicated employee exposure to several contaminants was of concern. Airborne concentrations of naphtha (8030306) ranged from 21 to 126mg/m3 in metal container manufacture. Toluene (108883) ranged from 0.18 to 6.7 parts per million (ppm). Methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933) levels ranged from 0.8 to 37ppm. Oil mist concentrations ranged from 0.04 to 0.10mg/m3. Formaldehyde (50000) levels ranged from 0.02 to 0.28ppm in plastic container manufacture with the highest level being recorded during the automatic (offset) silk screening operation. Naphtha and perchloroethylene (127184) levels ranged from 3.5 to 3.6mg/m3 and 0.08 to 0.1ppm, respectively. During plastic container molding, total hydrocarbons ranged from 0.48 to 3.5mg/m3. The author concludes that workers are exposed to formaldehyde in excess of the NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limit. The author recommends that improvements be made in the existing ventilation controls, thereby reducing these exposure levels.
