Description:In response to a request from employees at the Dallas and Mavis Forwarding Company (SIC-4731), Seattle, Washington, an investigation was begun into the possibility that working conditions were associated with skin rashes, upper respiratory symptoms, and nose bleeds reported by drivers while transporting newly manufactured trucks across the United States. Air samples taken inside the trucks were analyzed and over 100 organic compounds were identified. Nine compounds were chosen for quantitative analysis. Levels of these ranged from nondetected up to 2.0 parts per million (ppm) for xylene (1330207). All eight of the deckers who stack the truck cabs, and 30 or 35 drivers reported symptoms temporally associated with driving new Kenworth (KW) trucks over the 1-year period from November of 1990 through October of 1991. Skin symptoms were reported by over two thirds of the drivers and deckers for this same time period, most of whom had objective evidence of some type of skin rash. Twenty-six of the symptomatic employees (68%) saw a physician for their symptoms and 12 were prescribed some type of medication. Opening the windows alleviated their symptoms. While no specific substance or substances was identified as being responsible for these health effects, the investigators conclude that the variety of symptoms experienced appeared related to driving the newly manufactured trucks.
