Description:In response to a request submitted jointly on behalf of management and the International Chemical Workers Union, Local 758, exposures to organic solvents during manufacturing activities and hazards associated with the oven clean out procedures at Daubert Coated Products, Inc. (SIC-2671) in Dixon, Illinois were evaluated. The company manufactured release packaging products and corrosion inhibiting packaging by applying silicone polymers to paper or plastic film, and then passing them through ovens to evaporate the solvents and cure the polymers. The 8-hour time weighted average exposure to petroleum distillates during manufacturing activities exceeded the NIOSH recommended exposure level (REL) of 350mg/m3 at one of the coating machines. At several locations, levels of solvent mixtures exceeded the equivalent exposure criteria. Also exceeding recommended levels were exposures to total and respirable particulates during the oven clean out procedures. The author concludes that a health hazard existed from exposure to organic solvents and airborne particulates. The author recommends that effective confined space entry and respiratory protection programs be implemented. Local exhaust ventilation should be improved, and a ventilated enclosure should be installed around the coating head.
