Description:In response to a request from management and the United Steelworkers of America, Local 1010, an investigation was begun into potential employee exposures in areas of the cold strip mill at the Inland Steel Company (SIC-3316), East Chicago, Indiana. The facility produced cold rolled steel. Oil mist, naphtha (8030306), acid mist, metals, and hydrocarbons were measured in personal breathing zone and general area air samples from the facility. Airborne oil mist levels ranged up to 0.29mg/m3. Airborne naphtha concentrations ranged up to 43mg/m3. Hydrochloric-acid (10035106) and sulfuric- acid (7664939) were detected at concentrations below the evaluation criteria of 7mg/m3 as a ceiling and 1mg/m3. During a welding operation, low concentrations of calcium (7440702), iron (7439896), magnesium (7439954), and zinc (7440666) were detected. An attempt was made to identify potential contaminants produced as emissions from heated oils. The authors conclude that excessive exposure to oil mist, naphtha, acid mist, and metals were not found at the time of the survey, although these levels may not be indicative of typical exposures. Noise exposures exceeded evaluation criteria in several areas. The authors recommend that further industrial hygiene sampling be conducted, and that the hearing conservation program be improved.
