  In response to a request from the management of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (SIC-2759), Washington, DC, an investigation was begun into worker exposures to noise at the print shop of the facility. The print shop employed four workers. The equipment used in the shop included two offset presses, a camera with automatic developer, a paper folding machine, a collator/stapler, and a shrink wrap machine. The machines rested on vibration isolators. Employees wore ear plugs or ear muffs. For the five full shift samples taken, the range was 56.7 to 78 decibels. All were below the OSHA permissible exposure limit of 90 decibels-A. Work practices and engineering control measures were evaluated in response to worker concerns about chemicals used in the print shop. A sample was taken of the polyethylene shrink wrap, and it was observed that it gave off a variety of compounds on heating, primarily acetic-acid (64197), which could irritate mucous membranes. The authors conclude that workers were not over exposed to noise in the print shop. The authors recommend that improvements be made in ventilation and employee safety.
