  In response to a request from the employees at the Hayward Pool Products Facility (SIC-3089), Elizabeth, New Jersey, an investigation was begun into possible hazardous working conditions. Workers were concerned about skin disorders in the Tool, Model, and Maintenance Shops and the Molding Department
  
  deaths among coworkers were another concern. The company manufactured pool filters, pumps, and accessories. Dry, itchy, or irritated skin on the hands and arms were the most frequent complaints of the workers which seemed to occur after handling products molded from fibrous glass and during maintenance of machines that had molded these particular products. Respiratory irritation was reported by workers servicing polyvinyl- chloride molding machines. Eye irritation was reported by workers in the Modeling Shop. Volatile organic compound levels were measured in the Molding area. A review was conducted of death certificates, OSHA logs, first aid logs, and Material Safety Data Sheets for products used in these areas. The authors conclude that workers were not exposed to excessive air concentrations of volatile organic compounds, except perhaps methylene-chloride (75092). Reported skin symptoms were consistent with a diagnosis of intermittent eczematous dermatitis due to repeated contact with water. The review of death certificates did not indicate that deaths in employees were related to workplace exposures. The authors recommend measures to reduce worker exposures.
