Description:In response to a request, an investigation was begun into possible hazardous working conditions at the Kingwood Elementary School, (SIC- 8211) located in Kingwood, West Virginia. Employees and parents were concerned about the indoor air quality at the school. Complaints noted frequent respiratory (upper and lower) problems among students and workers. There were about 450 students and 39 employees at the school. Questionnaire responses pertained primarily to poor air circulation and temperature regulation. Carbon- dioxide (124389) (CO2) measurements were indicative of a ventilation system that did not adequately supply or distribute fresh air to the building. Some of the temperatures measured did not fall within the guidelines for winter conditions. Most of the relative humidity levels were below the recommended levels. The author concludes that no health hazards were identified, but most employees had experienced common building related complaints. The author recommends that a ventilation system which would meet criteria for occupant comfort and outdoor air ventilation rates should be provided.
