Description:In response to a request from the Newspaper Guild, an investigation was begun of a possible excess number of brain tumors in editorial staff members at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (SIC-2711) (SLPD), St. Louis, Missouri. The editorial staff was also concerned about electromagnetic fields and the possible relation to brain cancer. The staff used ATEX or IBM compatible personal computer terminals for their work. Seven persons were thought to have primary brain tumors; a review of death certificates and medical records indicated that in three of the cases the tumors had metastasized from other parts of the body. Another of the patients had an aneurysm, not a brain tumor. In two cases the primary brain cancers were medically confirmed to be of the astrocytoma cell type. They had worked in the editorial room for 15 to 20 years. There were two current workers who had been diagnosed with other tumors (meningioma and pituitary adenoma). Exposures to extremely low frequency fields in the SLPD were found to be typical of modern office facilities. The authors conclude that no basis was found for concluding that the cases of brain cancer were related to the physical environment in the SLPD building. The electromagnetic fields measured in the building were relatively low.
