Description:In response to a request from management, an investigation was begun into possible hazardous working conditions at the Hennegan Company (SIC-2754), Florence, Kentucky. The company was a print shop producing posters, catalogs, magazines, annual reports, labels, displays, and art prints. Over 300 workers were employed on site, 135 of them involved in production. Specific concern was voiced about the ultraviolet (UV) coating process on the web press. Trimethylolpropane-triacrylate (15625895) was not detected in any air samples. Levels of isopropanol (67630), toluene (108883), trimethyl-benzene (25551137) isomers, and total hydrocarbons in air samples were low. The author concludes that no health hazards associated with airborne exposure to chemicals used in the UV coating process existed at the time of the evaluation. The author recommends that improvements be made in the hazard communication program, and that an eye protection program be instituted. The author suggests that a noise survey be performed to determine current noise levels, that employees stop eating and drinking or smoking in the production areas and that a written respiratory protection program be started.
