Description:In response to a confidential request from employees at Gray and Company (SIC-2064), Hart, Michigan, an investigation was begun into possible hazardous working conditions at that site. Gray and Company produced candied fruits, fruit cake mixes, maraschino cherries, and chocolate covered cherries. Concern was voiced about the odors from silicone lubricants, hot melt glue, and propane fueled forklift trucks used in the Packaging Area. Employees complained of burning eyes, headaches, sore throat, sinus problems, upset stomach, and dry cough. In the Packaging Area, levels of carbon-dioxide (124389) were consistently below 1,000 parts per million (ppm). Temperature and relative humidity levels were maintained at 70 degrees-F and 50%, respectively. Levels of carbon- monoxide (630080) ranged from 5 to 25ppm. Levels of 1,1,1- trichloroethane (71556), ethyl-acetate (141786), and limonene (138863) were below the respective occupational exposure limits. Air filters were noted to have been installed incorrectly on the environmental control unit. The author concludes that no health hazards were observed which would explain reported health problems. The author recommends that damaged or missing filters be replaced. Cooling coils should be cleaned, and the efficiency of the air filters in the packaging area ventilation unit should be increased.
