Description:In response to a request from employees at the Lundy Packing Company (SIC-2011) facility located in Clinton, North Carolina, an investigation was begun into occupational transmission of Brucella- suis. The company was a 900 employee swine abattoir and packaging facility established in 1950. About 190 workers were employed in the kill division. About 8,000 hogs were processed per day at the site. A medical evaluation indicated that 30 workers (19%) met the case definition for brucellosis. Of the 30, 16 were newly identified cases. The highest percentage of workers identified as cases were employed in the head and red offal departments within the kill division. The infected workers appeared to have a history of being cut or scratched. Working in the head department also appeared to increase the risk. The authors conclude that skin or conjunctival contact with infectious tissue or fluids was the primary rout of exposure. The authors recommend that the facility attempt to process only brucellosis free hogs. The use of personal protective equipment, upgrading the ventilation system, and medical surveillance of workers at risk of exposure are recommended.
