Description:In response to a request from management at the Philips Display Components Company (SIC-3671), Ottawa, Ohio, an investigation was begun into possible hazardous working conditions at that site. Sore throats, laryngitis and hoarseness had been reported by several workers in the Aluminizing Department. The company employed about 1,800 persons over three shifts to manufacture cathode ray tubes (CRTs)
about 100 employees worked in the Aluminizing Department. During the manufacturing process, a thin layer of aluminum was coated to the interior of the glass CRT tube. Commonly reported symptoms among the workers included dry throat, hoarseness, frequent headaches, eye irritation, nasal congestion, and severe fatigue. Personal breathing zone and area air sampling did not reveal harmful levels of any substances. A time weighted average concentration of 0.13 parts per million (ppm) of hydrochloric acid (7647010) was measured. The authors conclude that a health hazard did not exist at the time of the survey. The hydrochloric-acid concentration may cause irritative symptoms in some sensitive persons. The authors recommend that additional sampling be conducted to identify the source of this potential irritant.
