Description:In response to a request from employee and management representatives of Unitron Industries, Inc. (SIC-3842), Port Huron, Michigan, a study was conducted of possible hazardous exposures to chemicals used in making hearing aid molds. Employees in the hearing aid mold manufacturing laboratory were concerned about the ventilation parameters, and whether chemicals would have acute or long-term health effects. Excessive exposures to methylene-chloride (75092), and possibly to ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate (7085850), were found. Subsequently, the company installed new ventilation systems. During a second survey, the worker exposures had been reduced to not detectable levels in most instances. Medical interviews suggested the workers were experiencing symptoms consistent with their chemical exposures and that the severity and frequency of these symptoms had notably improved with the implementation of the new engineering controls. The authors conclude that a health hazard existed from exposure to methylene-chloride and ethyl-2- cyanoacrylate
changes made to the ventilation systems appear to have reduced worker exposures to acceptable levels. The authors recommend measures to maintain current exposure levels and to alleviate other identified deficiencies.
