Description:In response to a request from management at the L-S Electro- Galvanizing Company (SIC-3471), Cleveland, Ohio, an investigation was begun into possible electric and magnetic field exposure at that site. Steel strips were plated with zinc alloy on the electrogalvanizing line. The electrogalvanizing lines employed 14 workers in a 24-hour operation. Occupational exposure was documented for levels of static magnetic and sub-radiofrequency electric and magnetic fields found at the facility. The static magnetic field (SMF) time weighted average (TWA) was estimated to be less than 50 gauss (G). The TWA SMF levels did not exceed the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) threshold limit value (TLV) of 600G. Sub-radiofrequency electric and magnetic field levels ranged from 0.1 to 10 volts per meter and 0.1 to 14G, respectively. Sub-radiofrequency magnetic field levels measured near an electrical substation door outside the facility exceeded the ACGIH TLV limit of 10G
however, this measurement was not considered to be an occupational exposure because workers were not normally found at this location. The authors conclude that a health hazard did not exist at the time of the survey from exposure to electric and magnetic fields.
