Description:In response to a request from the owner and an employee, an investigation was made into possible hazardous working conditions at Terry's Montessori School (SIC-8351) located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Possible causes of musculoskeletal problems occurring among the teachers and aids were the major concern. Investigators spoke with the owner, administrators, and teachers, made measurements of workstation and furniture dimensions, and distributed a questionnaire to school employees. Back pain or discomfort was the most common complaint, reported by 61% of the 21 employees who completed the questionnaire. Neck/shoulder pain, and hand/wrist pain were reported by 33% and 11% of the respondents, respectively. Employees spent significant periods of time kneeling, sitting on the floor, squatting, or bending at the waist. Those employees working with children 18 months of age and younger performed more lifts than those working with children 3 to 4 years old. Lifting task analysis using NIOSH lifting equations suggested that employees who handle small children may be at increased risk of lifting related low back pain. The authors conclude that employees may be at increased risk of low back pain and lower extremity injury due to work activities that involve lifts and static work posture. The authors recommend that these risks be reduced by modifying the workplace and changing work practices.
