Description:In response to a confidential request from employees of WBZ-TV News (SIC-4833), Boston, Massachusetts, an investigation was begun into carpal tunnel syndrome, musculoskeletal symptoms, and eye fatigue among videotape editors. The news station employed 258 persons, 190 of whom work in the TV group. Four medically confirmed cases of carpal tunnel syndrome were noted among employees within the past 2 years. Two occurred among the eight videotape editors. Several sources of musculoskeletal stress associated with news editing were identified, including suboptimal workstation and chair design. Workstations lacked adjustable surfaces and sufficient leg room under keyboards. Equipment layout resulted in awkward reaches. Workstations lacked an adequate surface for wrist support. The dial location on the control panel may result in muscle overload. Stressful work organization and psychosocial factors including working under deadline pressure, and a lack of control over the workload, the work environment and equipment were also identified. The authors conclude that ergonomic risk factors and possibly work-related musculoskeletal disorders were observed at this site. The authors recommend measures to reduce the ergonomic stress and to control and prevent future musculoskeletal disorders at this work site.
