Description:In response to a request from the Facility Manager for Cromwell Paper, Company, Chicago, Illinois, an investigation was begun into possible hazardous working conditions at that site. The request stated that a worker had complained of nausea whenever Ferro-Pak-MPI coating material was used in the treating machine. The division where the worker was assigned applied special coating materials to kraft paper as a corrosion inhibitor for metal parts. Another coating material, Ferro-Pak-W, was also investigated. Questionnaires, a physical examination, and pulmonary function testing were used in a medical evaluation. Two workers had a reaction to the fumes from Ferro-Pak-MPI, which was probably of an allergic nature. Substances which would have been released as fume or vapor during the treatment process were not detected in amounts which would have been expected to cause these reactions. The authors conclude that long term adverse health effects were not likely at this site. The authors recommend that local exhaust ventilation be improved. Proper personal protective equipment should be provided, particularly for workers who appeared to be sensitive to the emissions from Ferro-Pak-W and Ferro-Pak-MPI.
