Description:In response to a request, a health hazard evaluation was conducted at the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service office in Kingwood, West Virginia. Complaints had been made about eye and nasal irritation as well as general discomfort following exposure to solvent vapors which drifted into the office area. The study revealed exposures to perchloroethylene (127184) (PCE) which was used at the Patriot Coal Company Float and Sink Testing laboratory which was located in an adjacent room in the building. PCE vapor concentrations were monitored in the conservation office at 20 parts per million even though at the time of the study the laboratory was not conducting any float and sink tests. The author concludes that workers were exposed to PCE from the adjacent laboratory. The author recommends that the solvent vapors be controlled at their generation point. Conservation service workers should not be required to work in the office until PCE vapors have been eliminated. Women of childbearing age should be warned of possible congenital abnormalities which might result from these exposures.
