Description:In response to a request from management, an investigation was begun into exposures from coolants used in the Hot Line Department at Kaiser Aluminum, Trentwood Works (SIC-3355), Spokane, Washington. The facility was engaged in the production of aluminum sheet and plate. There were about 150 workers employed in the Hot Line Department. A walk-through survey, employee interviews, and a medical and industrial hygiene survey were conducted. Eleven employees who had experienced acute, work-related respiratory effects were identified. Six participants reported at least one work related acute respiratory symptom. No specific Hot Line jobs were associated with these effects. Eye irritation was reported by 70% of the participating production workers and 54% of maintenance workers. The prevalence of skin irritation was 44% among maintenance workers and 19% among production workers. Workers throughout the Hot Line Department were exposed to the mist/aerosol of the metalworking coolant solution. The coolant was a soluble oil, water-based fluid, containing many irritants and sensitizers. The authors conclude that workers were exposed to coolant mist which contained substances known to cause acute respiratory effects and pulmonary impairment, and irritant or allergic dermatitis. The authors recommend that exposure to coolant mists be reduced.
