  In response to a request from the Graphic Communications International Union, Local 505, an investigation was begun into possible hazardous working conditions at Donnelly Printing Company (SIC-2711), St. Louis, Missouri. Concern had been expressed about solvent exposures. Workers had reported dizziness, headaches, and nausea. The facility consisted mainly of one large, open room, that contains two offset printing press lines. A walk-through survey was conducted, along with employee interviews. Employee interviews indicated symptoms of nausea, dizziness, and skin irritation. A case of allergic reaction was well documented. The health and safety program at the site was very poor, particularly the communication of hazards at the job site. The authors conclude that although worker exposures to airborne concentrations of hydrocarbons were low, skin exposure could result in significant exposures. The authors recommend that efforts be made to improve the ventilation of the work areas, use of personal protective equipment, and the health and safety program.
