Description:In response to a request from the California State Department of Industrial Relations, an investigation was begun into possible exposures to airborne mold at the Deerwood Place Office Building (SIC-6531), San Ramon, California. Overwhelming fatigue had been reported in three previous workers in the Executive Suites of that building. Symptoms included not only the debilitating fatigue, but also skin rash, memory problems, and cough. Bulk samples were taken from the sound liner in the fan room. Reservoirs of fungi were identified, primarily Cladosporium and unidentified yeasts. Bacteria were also identified, predominantly Micrococcus, and lower levels of thermophilic actinomycetes. Water samples from the condensate drain pan revealed contamination with Cladosporium, Epicoccum, Alternaria, and unidentified yeasts typically found in outdoor air. Water in the condensate drain pan revealed various species of Pseudomonas as well as thermophilic actinomycetes. Elevated levels of Moraxella were present in water from a decorative fountain. Mosquitoes were noted in the mixing plenum of the air handling unit. The authors conclude that there was a potential for dissemination of bioaerosols into the building. The authors recommend eliminating all sources of standing water in or near the air handling unit, removal of contaminated porous material, and improved preventive maintenance activities.
