Description:In response to a request which indicated employees were experiencing eye, nose and throat irritation, allergy symptoms, and fatigue, an investigation was begun into possible hazardous working conditions at the Veterans Administration (SIC-8733) facility located at White River Junction, Vermont. The building has three floors and encompasses about 40,000 square feet, being one of several buildings at the location. Twelve general area air samples were taken for morpholine (110918) and cyclohexylamine (108918), two anticorrosion chemicals used in the boilers which provided steam humidification to the occupied areas. Three surface wipe samples were taken where an oily film had been noted in one of the research laboratories. Steam condensate samples were taken. Neither air nor wipe samples permitted the detection of these chemicals above the minimum detectable levels. However, the compounds were detected on a plastic sheet which had been hanging in a research laboratory for several months. Very low levels of formaldehyde (50000) were also detected in the area air samples from the research laboratories. The authors recommend that the direct injection of boiler condensate for humidification be discontinued.
