Description:In response to a request for technical assistance from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio an investigation was performed into possible hazardous working conditions during asbestos removal by a contractor (SIC-1799). The contractor was removing asbestos containing materials from Copeland Hall, a five-story structure. The project included the removal of acoustical plaster, thermal system insulation, and floor tile. Nine members of the abatement crew worked inside the containment on the day of sampling. Personal breathing zone air samples were collected and analyzed quantitatively for 2-butoxyethanol (111762) (2-BE) and refined petroleum solvent (RPS). Urine samples were collected and analyzed for butoxyacetic-acid (2516930) (BAA). Personal breathing zone (PBZ) exposure ranged from 8.9 to 95mg/m3. Exposures to RPS ranged from 56 to 60mg/m3, respectively. Urine concentrations of BAA ranged from 0.42 to 330 milligrams/gram creatinine. These results demonstrate that 2-BE was absorbed into the workers' body despite the use of respirators equipped with organic vapor cartridges. The PBZ readings were above the NIOSH recommended exposure limits of 24mg/m3 for 2-BE and 350mg/m3 for RPS. Dermal exposure may have significantly contributed to workers' overall exposures. The authors conclude that workers were exposed to potentially hazardous air concentrations of 2-BE and RPS. The authors recommend that efforts be made to control exposure, including the use of chemical protective clothing.
