Description:In response to a confidential employee request, an investigation was begun into respiratory problems reported by workers in the Ridge Frame department at the American Buildings Company (SIC-3441), El Paso, Illinois. Concern was expressed about potential exposure to welding fumes and paint vapors. Symptoms had occurred such as nausea, vomiting, headaches, and nose bleeds. The company employed about 225 workers over three shifts in the production of pre-engineered steel building structures. Of those working in the Ridge Frame area, 33 were welders and 13 were painters. Personal breathing zone exposures to total hydrocarbons were as high as 663mg/m3, exceeding the NIOSH recommended exposure limit (REL) of 350mg/m3. Elevated levels of welding fume components were also discovered which included inorganic arsenic (7440382), iron oxides, copper (7440508), manganese (7439965), and ozone (10028156). The inorganic arsenic concentrations exceeded the OSHA permissible exposure limit of 0.10mg/m3. The ozone exposure exceeded the NIOSH ceiling limit of 0.10 part per million. The authors conclude that a health hazard existed at the time of the survey from elevated exposure to paint vapors and welding fumes. The authors recommend that measures be taken to reduce exposures, improve hazard communication, and increase the availability of safety equipment.
