Description:In response to a request from three employees at WGN-TV and requests from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the National Association of Broadcast Employees for the ten Chicago area television stations, possible exposures to electromagnetic fields (EMF) were investigated at television stations (SIC-4833) in Chicago, Illinois. Concern was expressed about possible exposure to electromagnetic field radiation from portable television cameras, and brain cancer in exposed workers. EMF emissions from studio and minicam cameras were below current occupational exposure limits for both extremely low frequency (ELF) and very low frequency fields. ELF fields in studios, offices and various work areas were also below these limits. However, degaussers, used to erase magnetic tape, produced localized elevated ELF magnetic fields. Certain microwave communication equipment produced EMF levels in excess of occupational exposure limits, particularly if handheld or used in restricted environments. Exposure through the use of two-way radios was greatest if the antenna was mounted on the trunk of the car. Six cases of cancer, including only one case of brain cancer, were identified in electronic news gathering workers in the area since 1986. The authors conclude that levels of microwave radiation from some of the minicam equipment was above the current occupational exposure limit. The authors recommend that efforts be made to reduce occupational EMF exposure and improve workers safety.
