Description:In response to a request from management, an evaluation was made of the high voltage winding and taping department at the Square D Company (SIC-3612), Clearwater, Florida. Management had requested recommendations for engineering controls to prevent work related musculoskeletal disorders. The company manufactured high voltage and current instrument transformers used for revenue metering of power usage. About 30 workers were employed in the high voltage winding and taping department. The ergonomic evaluation indicated that winding jobs had the potential for inducing significant neck, back, and leg stress related to an assembler's height, the lack of vertical adjustability on the winding machine, the assembler's standing position, and use of the foot pedal. During set up and at the stem taping station the potential for risk of back injury was related to the various weights and shapes of the transformer units and the spinal stress related to mounting and dismounting the units while bending forward at the trunk. Seventeen of the interviewed employees (89%) including seven of nine randomly selected employees, reported musculoskeletal symptoms. Almost two thirds of the interviewed employees reported hand/wrist symptoms. Eleven of the 12 employees who reported hand/wrist symptoms related their symptoms to pulling paper or wrapping and taping. The authors conclude that assemblers in the winding and taping department have a potential risk for work related musculoskeletal disorders. The authors recommend that engineering controls, administrative controls, education and training, and a medical program should be instituted.
