Description:In response to a request from the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers Union, Local 3-639, an evaluation was conducted of possible hazardous working conditions at the Eveready Battery Company (SIC- 3313), Marietta, Ohio. Employees had expressed concern about exposure to sulfuric-acid (7664939) mists in the electrolytic cell room and leach area, and a possible association with cancer of the esophagus. Three former employees were reported to have died of cancer of the esophagus. At the facility, manganese ore was electrolytically purified to produce high grade manganese-dioxide powder. Sulfuric-acid was detected in 12 of 18 air samples taken in concentrations ranging from less than 0.06 to 0.5mg/m3, all well below allowable limits. Hydrochloric-acid (7647010) was detected in one of 18 samples and only in a trace amount. Four cancer patients were identified from a list of 119 current and former employees of the company, one of which was among the three cases of esophageal cancer previously identified. The authors conclude that, even though the findings suggest a possible excess of cancers of the esophagus among employees at the site, an association with work exposures, such a sulfuric-acid mist, could not be determined.
