Description:In response to a request from the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Worker's International Union, and the local, an investigation was begun into reported impotence and decreased libido among male employees at Ciba- Geigy (SIC-81118), McIntosh, Alabama. Concern was voiced regarding exposure to the chemical intermediate 4,4'-diaminostilbene-2,2'- disulfonic-acid (81118) (DAS) and resulting impotence and decreased libido. A target population of 129 male workers was identified for study. Levels of six reproductive hormones in 30 male workers who manufactured DAS and 20 former DAS workers were compared to hormone levels of 35 workers who manufactured plastics additives in a different manufacturing area. Lower mean total testosterone (TT) levels were found in the current and former DAS workers compared to additives workers. In logistic regression analysis, current and former DAS workers were 3.6 and 2.2 times more likely than additives workers to have lowest quartile TT levels after adjusting for age and body mass index. A questionnaire was used to analyze perceived libido and potency in the same groups. Results suggested that working in the DAS manufacturing area may have had an effect on sexual function. The authors suggest that occupational exposure during DAS manufacturing may be associated with alterations in male reproductive hormone levels, and with sexual dysfunction. The authors recommend that exposure to chemicals in the DAS manufacturing process should be reduced to the lowest feasible concentration.
