Description:In response to a request from the Steelworkers of America, Local 5760, investigations were begun into heat stress conditions at Consolidated Aluminum Company (SIC-3353), Hannibal, Ohio. The concern centered on heat exposure during the normal production in the casting facility and during maintenance activities in the casting facility and preheat building. The company manufactured over 30 types of aluminum alloys at this site. The basic process included melting the raw materials, adding alloys, casting the alloy into ingots, and roll compressing the ingots into sheet coil form for shipment. At the time of the study the environmental monitoring of occupied production areas in the casting facility identified wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) values ranging from 83 to 108 degrees- F. Dry bulb and black globe temperatures recorded in front of an open furnace door exceeded 115 and 180 degrees, respectively. The heat stress potential was increased by the work/rest cycle which could require the workers to be present in the exposure areas for extended periods of time. The author concludes that heat exposure may exceed the evaluation criteria at this facility, and there was a significant radiant heat load in some locations. The heat burden could be increased by the air stream from cooling fans, which exceeded 100 degrees. The author recommends that specific measures be taken to reduce heat stress conditions at this facility.
