  In response to a management request, an investigation was begun into musculoskeletal disorders in workers on the microwave oven assembly lines. at MCD, Inc. (SIC-3631), Anniston, Alabama. The facility employed 242 workers on assembly line activities producing microwave ovens and dehumidifiers. Using available data from OSHA logs of recordable injuries and illnesses, the incidence rates for disorders associated with repeated trauma at this site exceeded the average for this industry. Most of these were tendon disorders of the upper extremities and carpal tunnel syndrome. Confidential interviews were conducted with 16 employees. Ergonomic evaluations were conducted of jobs which used tools, wiring jobs, conveyor assembly line, quality assurance jobs, and lifting jobs. Several physical ergonomic stressors were noted, including highly repetitive tasks, awkward postures resulting from workstation design, and production requirements for some jobs that may exceed acceptable levels for a mostly female workforce. The authors conclude that work related musculoskeletal disorders were occurring at MCD, Inc. The authors recommend that engineering controls and administrative controls be instituted to prevent and control musculoskeletal disorders.
